About

Founded by people who've lived it

We've Been
There.

Our People Rise wasn't started by an institution. It was started by someone who hit bottom, found a way back up, and got tired of watching the tools for that climb hide behind a paywall.

Our story

From rock bottom to a movement.

AJ Lovewins spent years cycling through addiction and homelessness before the climb back — one honest conversation, one small tool, one community at a time. What struck AJ afterward wasn't that recovery was possible. It's that almost nobody could afford the tools that made it possible.

Our People Rise exists to close that gap. We document real stories of transformation and turn them into free, practical tools — cards, workbooks, films, and community events — so the next person doesn't have to rebuild alone, or pay to do it.

How we got here

The Timeline

A movement built one hard year at a time — not a straight line, but a real one.

2019

Rock bottom

AJ loses stable housing. The years that follow are addiction, crisis, and the slow, unglamorous work of finding a way back.

2021

Stability, then a question

Two years sober and rehoused, AJ starts asking why the tools that helped — therapy language, breathwork, community — are so hard to reach without money.

2023

The first cards

A hand-written deck of 52 prompts, photocopied and handed out at a shelter. People keep asking for more.

2024

Our People Rise is founded

The Hope in Hand deck goes into full production, free for anyone who signs up. The mission gets a name.

2025

The documentary

Production begins on American Tales of Triumph, documenting real transformation stories across the country.

2026

UCLA Speaker Series

Our first live pilot event — the start of bringing this work into rooms, not just mailboxes.

What we believe

Three things we won't compromise on.

Lived experience first

Every tool we build is shaped by people who've actually walked through addiction, homelessness, or crisis — not just studied it.

Radical access

Transformation shouldn't cost you your last dollar. Every card, every workbook, every screening — free, always.

Community over charity

We're not here to save anyone. We're here to stand next to people while they save themselves — that's a very different job.

Voices from the movement

A few of the people this work is for — names changed where requested, stories kept true.

“

The card system gave me something to do with my hands and my head at the same time. Week six was the first time I breathed on purpose in years.

I watched the documentary in a church basement with eleven strangers. By the end we weren't strangers. That's the whole program, really.

Nobody asked me for money. Nobody asked me to perform gratitude. They just handed me week one and said, whenever you're ready.
